Why fully skinned PU is the standard in waiting seating?

By Gregg Hagen, International Sales Manager:

When quoting waiting seating for high use and high traffic public areas I often get asked what PU is and why it’s better, in many cases, than vinyl or upholstery.

Whether in hospitals, clinics, bus stations, ferry terminals or airports, waiting seating is subjected to high use and susceptible to dirt, stains and mess that can leave permanent markings and damage on standard upholstery.  For this reason, customers seek a waiting seating solution that is durable, hygienic, easy to clean and will continue to look good over the rigours of it’s lifetime.

So what is PU?

PU is a Polyurethane finish.  It’s a fully closed cell that’s bonded to the foam.  This means that there is no layer between the foam and the upholstery, they are one in the same.

Why is PU the best?

PU is highly recommended for hospital waiting seating, clinic waiting seating, vet clinic seating and other high use public waiting seating areas where hygiene is important.

PU is:

  • Impervious to liquid and easy to clean
  • Doesn’t crack and is 3-5 times more resistant to cuts or tears than vinyl or other upholstery
  • Is one piece so there are no joins or stitching for moisture or dirt to invade
  • Seat base or backs are easily replaced
  • Highly resilient and durable

Alloyfold has a large range of waiting seating options, all with a PU covered option for seat and back padding.  We’ve got many reference sites where PU has been a successful option.
